Default Wearing safety gear may not save you but........

Wearing safety gear may not save you, but it can lesson the injuries enough to keep you sane after an accident.

How often do we say something like, "I'm just going down the street a couple blocks to the 7-11" and decide it's too much hastle to put our gear on? "It's too hot for all that stuff" is another redundant theme we often hear or even say. At my work guys often like to question me about why I choose to wear my gear in such hot temps......my answer.......I like my skin too much to take the chance of losing it in an accident. Yes it gets very hot and sticky, and to some, may not look cool, but what "IF" you should go down without it? How bad could it be? Believe it or not the outcome could cause you to decide death is the better way.

I came upon this thread today & after reading it & letting it sink in a bit, decided to share it with everyone here in hopes that it may help to convince people to wear their gear "EVERY TIME" they ride, even if it's just a quick jaunt down the street.

Please take the time to read the "Whole" thread.........

http://zrxoa.org/forums//printthread...262&perpage=84

Do you care enough for your friends & other riders you meet that you would risk pissing them off by suggesting that they always wear their gear even after they have told you to shut up about it?

What is the least amount of safety gear you will ride with? For me, I like to ride with at least a helmet, leather jacket with extra protection, gloves, & boots. If riding the twistys or track, then full head to toe safety gear including a spine protector.

Comments?

+1 Speed, at least wear a jacket gloves and boots if youre gonna ride. It seems like every year at this time you get the rider down posts and some hit very close to home... One happened to my group of friends last weekend on the 33. Its a sad thing. Sometimes we cant avoid the inevitable, but at least be prepared and dress for the crash.

Thanks SPEED for the reminder. It doesnt deter me from riding anymore, just deters me from treating the canyon like a racetrack and thats a good thing.

Be safe all....and dont forget your gun when you step out on the battlefield...GEAR UP.

That's a sad story but it's an everyday event. I'm amazed at how a lot of riders just wear the minimum safety gear, a helmet. I used to be a squid when I had my first motorcycle a CBR400RR back in Chile, but a good friend of mine with lots of riding experience taught me the value of wearing gloves, boots, and jacket no matter what the weather was like or where I was going, and now I'm so used to it that it's just second nature when I go riding. Just like FoolishMortal wrote once " better sweat than bleed" :thumbup

One thing the MSF course that I took way back when taught me was to ALWAYS wear gloves, boots that cover the ankle, helmet, and a jacket.

The least amount of gear I have worn over the past three years or so (once I learned the importance of it) has actually been recently:
gloves, helmet, work boots, and a riding jacket. (I haven't replaced the SIDI's and leathers that I lost yet, so I geared up with what I had....)
I was just going for a short ride around town, but I found myself uncomfortable without the SIDI's and the leathers. I am really uncomfortable in "just jeans", as they feel WAY TOO THIN.

I have had people ask me how I can wear my black leathers on such a hot day, and my answer??? I tell them I watched Dr. Phil and he said that wearing tons of clothes on a hot day helps you to lose weight, so that is why I do it... :laughing

This was indeed a very sad story. I always wear a protective jacket with armor, gloves, boots, helmet and heavy jeans. I've seen other posts where pictures were shown of what happens when you don't and it's scary. This poor guy's post was so descriptive that pictures weren't needed. Hopefully this opens up the eyes of those of you who don't wear proper riding gear.

Had the opportunity to "chat" with a stunter the other night...I asked him why he wasn't wearing any gear (except a helmet...and the ever protective Nikes and Levi's...lets not forget the white tee shirt with mandantory leather vest and "group" logo). His reply..."stunters don't wear gear cause it gets in the way..." Told him I would remind him about that statement when I saw him in the back of an ambulance someday. For whatever reason...lately I've seen lots of shorts/t-shirt wearing riders...dunno what they're thinking (especially the ones I see in sandals!!) :headscratch

Although...my favorite is probably the guy I saw in a leather jacket, no gloves, shorts and sandals... :laughing

First I'll say I allways wear the minimum helmet, jacket, gloves, and boots (all proper kit!) with denim jeans. Also wore a helmet before there was a helmet law in Cali but go across the border to Nevada and watch some people ride around without...bogles the mind.

Or scrambles it in a get off. :headscratch

I will keep this along with several other sorry stories that I know of in the back of my mind for future use.

Every time I think about doing a quick test ride without anything more than my helmet I try to remind myself about the suffering that others have endured doing the same thing.

Honestly, I don't think that gear would have spared this guy many of his injuries but it certainly would have help reduce the severity of several of them. Perhaps to the point where he'd still be here for his boy today. . .

RIP

+1

I've also seen a lot of dead people wearing helmets (little bucket type) that actually still had a sticker inside that read "novelty item only". A majority of which wouldn't have been dead if they had been wearing a true helmet.
