iTrader: (0) Rep Power: 7 (22) | Most of you have heard by now about the accident Dawn (Vyshtia) was in about two weeks ago. If you haven't heard about it, the information can be found here: http://www.smoothcurvesracing.com/fo...opic.php?t=304 There have been some people who have expressed an interest in helping Dawn out with the financial hit that she has, and will be taking, resulting from the accident (aka money for her to put toward medical needs, legal fees, bike repair, any gear repair she may need, etc.). Most of you who know Dawn are aware that she is the first person that steps up when one of us needs help, so it is our turn to help her out. If you would like to contribute financially, Dawn's paypal account is vyshtia@hotmail.com . No donation is "too small" and will be so appreciated. Hopefully in alleviating some of her financial stress we can help make this an easier time for her to get through. You can go to www.paypal.com and click on the "Send Money" tab. It will walk you through what you need to do. In the event you prefer to send a check, please send me a private message so we can get a mailing address for you. Also, please feel free to post up this paypal info on any of the other sites that you believe have people that are anxious to help. Thanks to everyone for their help! Deb

This morning on my way to work I noticed an unusually high amount of drivers making room for me as I shared lanes. Enough so I had to stop waving "thank you" because, 1st I'm sharing with one hand and 2nd my arm was getting tired! No matter how many times I watch that video for the life of me can I figure out why that guy went into a skid. No wonder the car owners insurance states specially not to let the guy drive!

iTrader: (0) Rep Power: 6 (56) | Well, my take on drivers and riders is that a lot of people seem to have become too comfortable behind the wheel or on a bike. Instead of actively riding or driving, their minds are off in La-La Land. Also, I think some people think they are the best drivers or riders out there and that there's no room for them to improve. These are usually the ones who cause the biggest problems. I personally would support banning cell phones in vehicles while driving. People who are yacking on the phone pay less attention to what's going on around them and are less likely to turn their heads to check their blind spots. Then there's the "Use your signal," not only does it let others know where you plan to go but it's also courteous (heaven forbid that we are courteous to others on the road). My personal pet-peeve, stop sign or red light runners. Just stop, folks! And, that's a complete stop, no California roll. I actually think the California stop is worse because it gives folks a false sense that the person is slowing down to stop and an innocent person may pull out and get hit. It doesn't take much time (an extra second or two) to come to a complete stop. Sitting at a red light isn't going to set you back more than 5 minutes. Finally, tailgating, riding someone's butt is not going to make them go faster or get the hell out of your way. It'll either piss them off and make them slow down. slam on the breaks, or continue on in your way just to piss you off more. Instead, go around them if they are going to slow for you. Really, it's not that hard. But, reality is even when you try your best to be courteous and drive safely, we are human, which means we will make mistakes. Dawn was hit by a guy that lost control of his vehicle. Was it his fault (losing control)? I don't know. Could he have prevented himself from hitting Dawn? I don't know. But, he did hit Dawn and she did her best to deal with the situation at hand. Hopefully everything works out for her. And, I'm a rider and a cager (definitely a cager while it's raining). I hope that in the event of an accident that I did everything I could to prevent it, but if unavoidable I hope no one is injured and all can walk away from it. No one wants to intentionally hurt others, but sometimes we forget that we are not the only ones on the road and thus don't monitor our driving/riding habits. So, be sharp, be safe and actively ride or drive! Time to step off my soapbox. |

The only explanation could be (and by no means excusable) he was distracted (Cell phone, trying to find music on non labeled pirated CDs?)and when the day dream was over and he looked back where he was supposed to be looking freaked out and slammed on the breaks. Another problem is that all four tires where locked up...now that's brisk baby! Asshat ding ding ding ding we have a wiener!!! Man, in the same situation if the guy was sitting next me trying to talk his way out of it and not apologizing up and down from East LA to Timbuck 2 he would have been crapping out his teeth for the next week. No luck involved, she made a target out of where she wanted to go and considering the heavy breaking she was under and the lack of space to maneuver that was getting smaller by the nano second, it was all skill. Be the bike naaannaannananananaaa....

| Squid | I would agree that the driver of the car was most likely distracted. My guess would be cell phone. Especially since he checked his cell phone when he got out of the car and closed the phone shut before going over to Dawn. Damn that video is going to gold for Dawn. Anyway, Dawn could have easily been killed. Sometimes it doesn't matter how good of a rider you are or what escape route you take. Sometimes your number is just up. She could have easliy been run over by the car in the other lane, broken her neck on the fall off the bike, etc. Fortunately for everyone it just wasn't her time. Skill definitely contributed to her survival but luck played a roll as well. No need to argue about it. Just pointing out the obvious.

Yeah...he could have taken his foot off the brake :biglaugh Interesting this is about 4 days after her accident there was a similar accident on the 10 in Covina (W/B going down Kellog Hill towards Covina). Honda driver lost control and spun out in commute traffic, not at high speeds. The rider of an FZ-1 (hmmmm...another yammi) tried to brake hard (or so it is said) and hit the Honda head on...but the rider wasn't so lucky...he was dead at the scene. Just something to think about. | |
