Come on…they’re kidding right! Perhaps we should wear our leathers too :

You do have a good point there. Wearing a helmet at all times while an awesome idea, might not be something that is forced upon us. I don't think this is quite the same issue as the helmet law (on the street)... I think the track day orgs are just trying to cover thier asses, whereas the helmet law is the govt trying to protect us from ourselves.

+1. I think that it may become a must if for nothing else but legal reasons.

This was all originated because of the recent death of Glenn McComb. I don't know if any of you know but his rearset actually punctured his skull. So, I don't think it would be a bad idea to require helmets any time you are on the bike. The track is probably catching a bunch of flak for him not wearing a helmet. They promote safety but yet let riders ride around the pits without a lid. The real question to ask yourself is, "If the track required me to wear a helmet in the pits would I stop going?" "Would I find alternate means of getting around?" It just depends on you.

I for one would not give flack to the track or the organization that was running the track day for this accident. They are not responsible for what occurred to this rider. There for it would not affect my decision to go to that track or to an event put on by that organization. There are more important things to consider such as what type of session they run. Open, two group or three group. Do they run a smooth organized event? If I were a new rider, do they offer instruction? How expensive is the track day? Etc....
Whether they require a helmet in the pits or not is at the bottom of my list.

This was directed to you personally. I would think it would be a smart decision on behalf of the track since "liability" could be assessed to them for not taking proper saftey measures and following with state law to be wearing a helmet while operating a motor operated cycle while on their grounds.

The helmet law only applies to public roads. A track is private property and you sign a waiver when you enter.

This may be better suited for someone like BR996 to touch on, but I believe that law only covers public roads and property.
