Hmmm...or just have him register it in AZ and ride it for a year with AZ plates and current stickers. Then reapply next year for the CA registration. That might be a temporary solution so that he can at least ride it. I know there's some rule out there about living in CA and driving an out-of-state vehicle, but it sounds like the DMV is being bullheaded.

As for registering it in Az., might work, but after a year, the DMV would probably look at the registered owners license info...if he/she has a California address, then they could levy additional fines (friend with the Tundra asked about doing that...they weren't amused). Also if they got stopped in Cali with Az plates and a Cali address on their license...more fines from the DMV.

Ugh, I guess DMV is living up to its reputation. Talk about not user friendly and definitely not about customer service and helping the public.

Not to mention that the CHP has a site set up for people to anonymously report their neighbors for having out-of-state plates. (CHP - "CHEATERS")

I have an out of state Super Hawk and registered it just fine. They did a VIN verification and that was it. It only had 5k miles on it. Not sure what the deal is. This was last April.

I used to own a 49 state viffer that originally came from the Washington area I believe. It was already registered here, so I never had a problem with it.

I've also heard of people buying a dash from eBay that has more miles on it, registering it, and then putting the original dash back on....

If you have less miles than you started with, does that mean the ins co owes you money? ?? :P

I got lucky with my '03 636. Bought it new in AZ, then brought it over to Cali (I was a CA resident already). Totally forgot about the 7500 miles deal. When I went to register it, the lady came out did a VIN/ serial # verification, asked me for my smog certificate. "Oops, I left it at home." It was busy and near closing time, she let me go!!! The bike had less than 100 miles on it!! Got lucky there!!

I also had a 49 state used bike with 7200 miles. I rode it for 300 miles (during my 10 day waiting period of course) then went and registered it. Would this work for your friend?

If all else fails: Remember, in this situation, its only illegal IF you get caught!

Basically, they want to see the CARB sticker and Federal Emissions sticker. It is a pain in the ass. I've got 3 grey bikes titled and licensed here, but I would never buy another CA bike without it being CA titled.

Once again, sorry for the long delay in reporting the end to this story.

His bike has been placed on a list of banned bikes in CA. The second time he went to the DMV the guy told him this was the second time he was trying to illegally register the bike in CA and he was mailing a letter to Sacremento to ban his bike from CA.

WTF??!!?

My friend is now getting an address in AZ. :p
