Unhappy Rider Died on Banner Grade Today

RIP

Marine killed in motorcycle crash near Julian

By: The Californian
JULIAN -- A 22-year-old Camp Pendleton Marine was killed Saturday when he crashed his motorcycle while riding with a group of friends on Highway 78 just east of Julian, authorities said.

The motorcyclist, whose name was not immediately available, was riding a 2006 Suzuki GSXR eastbound, at an "unsafe speed," on Banner Grade at about 9:30 a.m. when he lost control of the bike and veered into oncoming traffic lanes, then went off an embankment, California Highway Patrol officer Brian Pennings said.
"That grade is extremely curvy, and it's pretty steep," Pennings said.

The motorcyclist then sideswiped an oak tree and hit another directly, landing about 30 feet below the tree, the officer said.

The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet, died at the scene. His body was found at about 10:30 a.m. by his friends, a group of seven other Marines that noticed him missing a few minutes after the crash and went back to search, Pennings said.

The friends called authorities from a roadside call box; none witnessed the crash, he said.

This is very sad. Been reading this a lot lately and it's killing me.

This is exactly why I started this site, to help people learn how to ride better & to learn to pass on that experience to others.

Many of us have been out there riding too fast on the street, and need to take it down a notch or two. This is a dangerous sport that we enjoy, please always keep that in mind while you are out there having fun.

I've been reading far too many posts like this recently. I'm glad for track days (now that I've learned about them). It's easier to keep my pace down on the street knowing I'll be hitting the track.

Banner grade should not be ridden by newbies.

If he was going eastbound and hit a tree I'd say he didn't make it very far on Banner. Not that many sharp turns in that area if I recall. Damn shame is what this is.

It's a public road, you shouldn't have to be an 'advanced' rider to be able to ride it. People just need to slow down, it's only a road...

RIP.
