Default Palomar to get Speedbumps

Read in the UT this morning, that after Sally's accident, the Volunteer Fire Chief is calling for rumble strips and speedbumps.
They've really had enough of the fatalities and "racers" at all hours.

If it really comes to be, it will be a real loss of a fantastic road that we've all enjoyed for many years. I think it will just move the "traffic" further east unfortunately...

Read it here:

The rumble strip along the center line is a good idea, but not speed bumps into the corners...that would blow.

That's been in the works for a while now, Sally's unfortunate passing just brought it to the front of the media.

As much as I'm opposed to any Man's intervention into citizen's life including most restrictive actions and devices to protect us from ourselves... Palomar "regulars" brought it on themselves. I don't care if it's squids taking out others or seasoned "racers" with mad skills carving a perfect line hitting every apex. It's about selfishness.

When I used to come to the mountain (like 3-5 times a year) my friends and I had a habit of talking to people at Mothers' when we ordered the food and ate. I heard complaints about early riding every single time. Exactly like mentioned in the article: at 3am. And then we wonder where all selfish jerks on four wheels come from. Cause we're different, aren't we?

It's the same selfishness. People live there. You just don't bother to find out, to pay attention to the driveways, or you know and don't care at all. You come there at 3am thinking the mountain belongs to yourself; Just like a soccer mom thinks there's no one on the freeway, but her, neither bothers to look in the mirrors to find out.

I'm guilty of making multiple passes on the Tight Side in my "canyon carver" past. Once I found out people live there I stopped. I'd go up and then down the Fast Side, and move on. Would you like 18-wheelers making an informal night meeting/parking spot near your house? Or the Fast and Furious crowd? Driving in and out all night because that spot is convenient for them. Would you go at 2am to socialize with them admiring their trucks/cars? No. You'd call the police. Cause they are violating your most essential right in this country: to have as much physical comfort as you can reach and grab with your hands.

I bet if any one of my "intended audience" (Palomar junkies who've been coming there every weekend for years) is reading it right now, they're probably wondering: "what people?", "what driveways on the Tight Side?", "who lives there?", "do we really bother them?", "my exhaust is a little loud, so what?", etc. Just like a clumsy SUV driver is scratching her(his) head after cutting off another motorist on the freeway: "where that car came from?"

Sorry for the rant.

Did anyone read the misinformation reported as fact? WTF? This does this writer have no clue or what?

"On Sunday, a 60-year-old woman was killed on Palomar Mountain when her motorcycle crossed the center line of South Grade Road and collided with a truck making a turn."

I e-mailed the writer and heard back.. They are working on getting a correct report from the CHP and correcting the article.

Default Palomar

I am always upset to read about a biker crashing , getting hurt or worst case losing their life. Does anyone know the actual number of crashes and deaths on Palomar this year? Unfortunately, there are lots of riders and cage drivers out there being reckless and making a bad name for all of us. I went through this same type thing years ago with the hot rod-cruiser type crowd. We used to cruise through Escondido and park in all the strip mall lots and party-until neighbors complained and the cops put an end to it all. Anytime a group of folks get together in large numbers problems arise. And if there is speed involved there will be accidents- some self inflicted some not. Not matter what the cause just groups hanging out and being noisy, leaving trash etc. upsets people who are not part of that group ie locals who live in that area and have to clean up the mess left behind. Common courtesy and consideration of others go along ways to making your group welcome in certain areas. I am sorry that the problems on Palomar have led to decisions such as putting in groves and speed bumps but since we have not managed to self police our ranks- we all pay the price. RIP Sally and all the other riders that Palomar has taken from us!

I don't think legally they can put rumble strips in across the lane in the corners, this would cause a loss of traction(even for cages), and any injuries as a result would be their fault. The same strip in the the entrance and exit will only cause us to take a corrected line through those corners..yeah, it may slow us down a bit, but only a little. Nowhere does the article say "speed bump".
