iTrader: (5) Rep Power: 16 (42) | Awhile back I came across a thread on BARF (Bayarearidersforum.com) where the owner Steve was invited to a special CHP function, and then a ride- along to help riders understand what they go through in having to deal with riders, and to hopefully help relations. The concept was good, but really didn't go any further than the ride-along and write up. My personal experience with the CHP hasn't been good at all. I hear stories about someone getting let go on offences much worse than I usually get nailed for. As polite as I can be, I've never been let go by them. If they pull me over, I get cited no matter what. :pat They always lecture me, and act like I'm the scum of the earth. My experience with local PD's has been a lot better in that they seem to be easier to deal with, and have been open to my explainations. With so many people riding sportbikes now, many of which are stunters, and people doing crazy things on freeways, we have seen a greater amount of CHP out inforcing new laws intended to put a halt to all the craziness. Often they are told to look out for anything modded on a bike, and to write the offenders a big fat citation. What has happens is that people that are not doing the crazy stuff get popped as well, and that has seemed to help create more hatered towards the CHP. I have definately toned down my own riding on the street, but have seen many more that refuse for whatever reason. The new laws coming from our state dept are getting more & more hardcore every year. Pretty soon we'll have serious horsepower restrictions, and new laws prohibiting us from riding in the hills we love. What can we do to help relations with the CHP, and other law enforcement agencies? Can riding along with a CHP officer help us to understand what they go through trying to deal with us? Do we need to have some kind of special task force groups set up with mixed members between them and us? We all get pissed off about some of the things that are done to us without provocation, but are we willing to do to make things better? I believe we can set up some kind of communication, but are we willing to make compromises? Are we willing to follow through with any promises we make in return for less profiling, and excessive ticketing? We need to get through to others that ride with reckless abandon somehow......but how? Sportbikeswest.com is a place where we care about people, and love to reach out to help them learn, and grow as riders, and racers. So far we've been able to help quite a few people see that smooth controlled riding is where it's at. We have taken new people to the track, and helped them prepare their bikes to pass tech inspection. We have been fortunate to see these people in turn, helping others that have been doing the same on down the line. I believe we should try to focus our minds on becoing the best riders possible, and that doesn't mean the fastest on the street. The first time a fast street rider goes to the track he'll be humbled big time. I'll most likely never give up street riding, but will not be riding as hard on the street as I do on the track. | Canyon Carver | I'm all for graduated hp restriction licenses. Keep squids off 150hp bikes, and open up the resell market on bikes. Ex: 0-6mo: 30hp 6mo-1yr: 50hp 1yr-2yr: 115hp 2yr+: unlimited Maybe at the 1yr mark, require the advanced MSF course. As for the head-to-head with the CHP, certain LEOs will never get over the "reckless, law breaking, stunting sportbikers" sterotype. Now, if they could get some un-biased guys in there or at least some un-biased training on sport riding then something might be accomplished. The ladder-style licensing would help too by keeping the inexperienced off of the 150mph monsters, which would reduce abuse at least a little bit, which in turn would also help with CHP relations. |

iTrader: (0) Rep Power: 6 (56) | Unfortunately there are a bunch of squids out there who feel they don't need any education in riding or street laws. Those are the ones that are giving all riders a bad rap. Riding is a great sport, but it's also dangerous. Those that haul ass on the highways, doing stunts in traffic, pass on the double-yellow, etc. do nothing but endanger their own lives and the lives of others, while presenting a bad image for the rest of us. I say let's educate, but then again there will be those that think they are too smart and don't need to learn. I which case, may God have mercy on them. Sorry about the rambling, but damn it people. Learn to be responsible for your actions. If you're speeding and get caught, take your ticket. If you get written up for illegal exhaust, well hell, you knew it was illegal and only a matter of time. Caught popping a wheelie? Oops, tough sh*t! There's a place and a time to screw off, public roads aren't it. Take it to the track or designated areas. |

iTrader: (0) Rep Power: 4 (28) | In all seriousness, Mike and I have discussed this a little already. I think the sportbiking community as a whole needs a little self-policeing. Think about bike nights, especially the ones the cops hit time and time again. Usually the cops show up as a result of complaints. Around here the complaints were all focused toward the stunters. They might be ok as people, I don't really know any, but they choose the wrong time to show off and are going to ruin it for all. The group that was causing the problem here was asked to leave, I spoke to a local PD Sgt and he said complaints were way down. Problem solved. I hear about the Pally mafia...is that a joke? This is exactly what the public doesn't need to hear about!! Palomar is a public roadway not a track no matter what anyone says or thinks. I haven't seen any of their antics in person, because I've never been to Palomar, but they are well documented in posts on various web sites. I hope it's another case of a few ruining it for the majority and that most of the members are smart enough to put a stop to reckless antics. That would take a lot of heat off Palomar. Sorry to throw you down Shaggy, but the pics of you on the race bike at Pally, not smart. You could've lost the bike for a month or more depending on the registration status if you had been caught. Is it worth it? I know you aren't the only one, and you probably won't do it again, but it doesn't sit well with the public when they see a race prepped bike running up the hill. I've seen race trim bikes in the local canyons while I was riding, not good. About two years ago I took one away from a guy above Ojai and as far as I know he never got the bike back. He also made the mistake of running. I had a helicopter, he didnt. When Dawn got the new R6 I know she wanted to take it out, and I'm more than likely the only reason she didn't. Out of respect for me and knowing the consequences of what could happen if she was to be caught. Not worth the price of a new bike! |
