| Know It All | A couple people have made referece to Alex's green ZX9 that had the green tires on it. They were an early compound and a street tire NOT a race tire. It did wear out pretty fast and wasn't the best grip, but that was 2+ years ago, and since then, the race compounds have come out and I'm sure the street compounds are better too. Rubber tech is advancing very quickly on all fronts...Think of the tires you had on 3-4 years ago...comparable to what you've got now? not a chance. Many references to "retread" is made also...this is NOT what these are. They are REMOLDED, retread is the wrong term and does not explain what these tires are or how they are made. The fear of them splitting off like semi truck tires often do is unfounded, and the basis for most of the fear and negative comments toward these tires. The new rubber is baked on under pressure and the whole tire becomes one piece. I heard a lot of people talk about these, and I researched them a bit when they first came out. I've noticed that most people are grossly mistaken as to what these tires are, how they are made, and what they are about. Tomahawk started out making aircraft tires. Hmm it's interesting that people that have $100,000 to $1,000,000 airplanes trust thier high dollar machines and thier livelihood on these tires thousands of times per day, and there is such fear and loathing to do the same with your much less expensive machine and your livelihood on the street and or track. Don't get me wrong having trust and faith in your tires is paramount in maintaining your confidence in your cycle anywhere, and most certainly on the track. As noted in earlier posts, some peeps are racin on them....hmmm They have a huge hurdle to overcome to break through the resistance and distrust of thier rubber. The biggest problem I see, is that any crashes will immediately be blamed on the tires becuase of whatever reason, mostly because they aren't the name brands we trust so implicitly. If they could sell these without disclosing how they are made, this would be a totally different conversation, it would only be how they stack up compared to other tires. I read this over and it sounds a little harsh, I'm not trying to start an argument or a flame war, just puttin in my .02 ya know :wave

iTrader: (0) Rep Power: 4 (28) | A while back I was behind a GSXR600 with Tomohawks, a very experienced, exracer at the helm (although he raced in europe)...the rear of that bike was cutting a two foot wide path through turns 2 and 8 at WSIR. According to him, Tomohawks are good for the street...not so good at higher track speeds (he runs high 1:24's). He did say that they are "slippery" and tend to move around a lot on the track. Later in the day he laid the bike down coming out of 4. I haven't seen him bring Tomohawks to the track since, but he says he still uses them on the street because they're cheap...and good for daily use. He trusts them for daily use and I know he's been using them for a while now...although he doesn't get them in strange colors. But you'd never see them on my bike (the stack of take-offs in the garage, or stacks, are too high for me to use anything else :biglaugh ) |

Mainly because of time, in the time spent shaving down a new tire versus re-applying rubber to a worn tire you could have 4 or 5 new tires resurfaced versus all the time wasted correcting one bad tire. You would also have to re-examine the shaved down carcass to assure that you have removed the void or even worse it could be in the carcass and therefore impossible to correct. I myself have used their T2 and Slicks and believe that they were the same but possibly better than any of the Pirelli Supercorsas that I had been running all year long. | |

iTrader: (1) Rep Power: 2 (13) | I think they meant re-gring the rubber and re-do it again with fresh rubber.. But the carcass could have been bad... I met Garth (waay back at Stockton doing some SM) And he was the Tomahawk guy he was always looking for 160 carcasses to do new SM tires with too... I suspect some carcasses are bad from dunlop, bridgestone, mich, etc etc.. So untill tomahawk does the x-ray dealio they would not know what is good or bad... I would try them for sure and IF they worked as good as a new 1 time molded tires I would run the. Not legal for AMA however.. I got scolded for runnning metzeler's at FOntana this year and Pirelli and Metzeler are the same company... Ahhh the AMA how they make no sense AMAZES me
