I remember after I put my deposit on my 5...as I was driving home from the dealer I saw a BMW development new-model 5-series rolling around. Heh, felt great about the timing on that one.

I see development cars all the time. I remember chasing the Chrysler 300C up La Cienega and then down Sunset to get some good shots. They saw me with the camera and gunned it :lmao Tried to give 'em to Car and Driver but they never got back to me :headscratch

Where is this development center? For some reason I see these new cars, still with unfinished bodywork or obvious body cladding rolling down Sunset all the freaking time. I see at least one a week. Can't imagine where they're going.

Who knows they hide them well.....I know for has a test center right off I40 between Needles and Kingman and on ocasion you'll see the transports roll out there with new stuff on the trailers......I don't think it was the M5 but it was deffinatlly a 5 it had the same wheel stance and rouhgly same body lines and deminsions as the M Car but it lacked the dual exahust...

Sure it wasn't the new 3 series. The Sedan is in the mags now with the coupe and convertable still on the way. I think the 5 is only a couple years old now unless there going to change it so soon.

There test centers all around the desert. the one of the I40 you mentioned is Ford's test track. Honda has one in Mohave somewhere. VW/Audi was one near Pheonix.

Then why do I constantly see them driving down Sunset and around West Hollywood? :headscratch Where the hell are they going? I know a few makers have test tracks in Arizona and in CA near the AZ border, but why would they be here? You'd think they'd pick something other than a tourist trap to be driving their prototypes around.

It's possible it may have been the 3 but it looked to big to me if it was the new 3 then they have greatly increased the size......

Honda's Test Facility is over near WSIR I belive kindda out in the Tejon Ranch Area......GM has a proveing ground south of Pheonix as well got to see the prototype XJ6 in the early 80's while my dad was demoing some big equipment out there....

Personally I think they drive stuff like that in the heart of a big city on purpose to see what the publics reaction is....

usually when you see them rolling around town or in the canyons (see them at ACH often as well as malibu) its the employees going for a joy ride or some magazine doing a review.

Real world testing in traffic, sitting at lights, freeway, etc etc.
