On thing to consider Sean.

Different competency levels help us define what is safe.

For example, Mike's (SPEED) pace at Palomar is safe for him. I totally trust Mike at his pace on his mountain. But for me to try to ride that pace would be "unsafe".

Now, if what you mean by being unsafe or what you saw as unsafe was blatant, then you are right.

Thanks for your replies Ado. I totally agree with the compancy level statement and I did actually say something to that effect in my original post. Some of the people we both have ridden with are more than capable of riding at quite extreme speeds, but that doesn't make their speed safe for the conditions or roads they frequent.

After the "they must have bailed incident" I decided to offer all my help for newbie rides also. I didn't want to see something like that happen again. Thas's why James and I took it upon on ourselves to help the new people out on Tony's ACH ride when most of the regulars were out @ the track. I totally appreciate the people like yourself who take their time to offer their assitance to newer riders of course it has its perks too, darn you mean I have to ride with all the new cuties again :confused :laughing

I was really angry when I posted the original post. I've had time to settle down some now. I still mean what I said, I'm just not angry about it anymore. I don't have a problem with people who want hook up with their friends and go run the canyons. I have a problem with people who have pompus or elitist attitudes. And to be specific I am talking about publicly advertised group rides newb or otherwise.

I've liked being a backmarker lately, I've been really enjoying doing my turtle thing, it totally allows me to run @ my own pace and enjoy the scenery. That doesn't mean I think everyone should conform to what I am doing right now in order for them to be safe in my eyes. I am sure I will be riding faster again in the future (probably not much faster) When I see group rides posted I always honestly ask if a slow guy is ok because I know how fast certain people ride and I know I will not be keeping that pace. So if people don't want slow people to come they should say so. There have been plenty of times lately when I have declined to ride down with certain groups from Nuke's because I knew I was going to be doing my turtle thing and that they would be hauling a$$.

I have fun riding canyons if I didn't I wouldn't do it. For the people that wish to do this also and have no experience at it I feel it is important to convey the right message as a fellow rider I feel it is a responsablity. I have only heard of one accident this year that resulted in major injury or death, in the canyons, that wasn't speed related. Either a rider that was riding to fast for themselves or a rider that was riding to fast for conditions and that to me is no accident.

I think the winning comment for me was being told that I don't belong on Palomar Mountain.

That was just great for my self esteem. :bash

Hey No problem Sean. I think its cool you can express yourself, and even more so when all can discuss this in a mature manner.

Yeah, I believe that if someone posts a ride, there is some implied responsibility to keep the group together.

Anyhow.see you Sat bro!

Default Re: So I think I've had it!....Long Rant FYI

I can totally empathize with you Freakshow. I have not been on a lot of group rides this summer. But a few and mostly with not too large of a group. I got into sportbike riding after riding dirtbikes in my youth and cruisers much more recently. I have seen some of the things you mention and they bother me as well. But I have also been on some rides that are managed pretty well. I am an older dude and attribute a lot of the stuff you mention to a lack of maturity. The cruiser crowd I ride with are a bit older than I am and those rides are always well run and have yet to have a rider go down. And I attribute that to having more maturity.

Riding with a group is fun but some groups are better than others. As is human nature. I have found that riding in a small group, 3 or 4, is usually best. I am usually the slowest in the groups I ride in. I don't mind seeing the group pull away from me. I ride my pace and practice my form and just enjoy the ride. I hope my slowness doesn't bother those I ride with. But if it does they can always just leave me behind take off. I am a big boy and can take care of myself. With having newbies in a group though that should never be the case.

As far as getting some mentoring or guidance when out riding in a group. That seems to rarely happen. And again I understand it. Most folks just want to rip it up and not have to hold back critiquing someone's form. Some people are good at teaching but most are not.

I ride ACH every now and then as well as some of the other connecting roads. I may see you out and about. Maybe we can do our own group ride some time.

Ride safe and enjoy.

Sean,
Any time you want to head to North San Diego County, we can drum up some people around here and poke around. There are some great canyons around here, and we tend to end up at Palomar where the fast people can do their runs and the slower people aren't "holding up" the fast people.

Chris and I go to Palomar when we can on the weekdays, often in the afternoon. I sometimes can finessse my schedule to get a weekday off, but I prefer to have someone I know on the mountain with me when I am up there. We also are always riding on the weekends. Lately Chris and I have been taking the 78 out to Old Julian Highway then to the fast side of Palomar. We tend to leave around 10 or 11, which puts us at Palomar around 12 or 1 (depending on if we stop to eat sandwiches we take with us before we get to Palomar.) I am not comfortable at Palomar until most people have cleared out, and lately on the weekends by around 1 most people are gone. There is also a pretty route to take to Palomar via Escondido...

Anytime you want to ride with super mellow people, shoot me a message and we can pull something together!

(Chris is leaving again in about a week and a half and will be gone until some time in December...I am ALWAYS looking for people to ride with, especially when he is gone...)

Oh, and I do LOVE the signature!!

Deb
