iTrader: (5) Rep Power: 18 (42) | TiVo Vs. Cable Company's DVR Vs. Store Bought DVR Picked up a Free TiVo from Gwyneth (thanks!) & started looking at hooking it up & the service contracts they offer. The unit I have is a 40hr & looks to be outdated now by 80hr, 180hr, and 300hr units. Then there's the cable company's DVR program which offers HD + DVR with 80hrs. Finally we have a store bought DVR that Throttlepimp purchased recently that has quite a few pluses like being able to burn right onto a DVD all in the same unit. TiVo boxes & plans: TiVo.com | Buy TiVo TiVo.com | Buy TiVo TiVo.com | Buy TiVo Charter Cable DVR: http://www.charter.com/Visitors/Products.aspx?ProductItem=7 Throttlepimp's DVR: Basically it looks like I have some more research to do. To swich from Charter HD box to their HD/DVR box it'll cost me just under $10 per month. As you can see in the links provided for TiVo service it'll be twice that unless I pay for more than one month service. The store bought unit will go for around $500 & up for somehting like Throttlepimp has but doesn't require a service contract. What about Satellite & their DVR Vs. Cable? Fill me in here peeps......... I need help! ![]() What do you have/recommend? Right now we have 1-Charter HD Box 1-Charter regular box & Charter Internet. iTrader: (1) Rep Power: 7 (62) | I have Time Warner Cable hd + dvr. Haven't had any problems. I don't really have a lot of experience with the others. It costs me around $10/month. |

| Canyon Carver | The Scientific Atlanta boxes (I dunno which boxes Charter uses. But SA is the most common) have a usb port where you can plug in external HD to increase your storage size. Unfortunately, the programs only play on the dvr. |

iTrader: (0) Rep Power: 5 (34) | +1 on the Time Warner box. Nice thing about renting the box is I get to return it any time it messes up. I've never used a Tivo so I can't say if it's better or not. I do know using the internet to program your Tivo is pretty pimp and wish the cable company would let me do that. |
